National Immunization Awareness Month

August’s National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) provides an opportunity to recognize one of the most significant achievements in modern medicine. Vaccines have helped prevent millions of deaths and dramatically reduced the burden of infectious diseases worldwide. As families prepare for a new school year and communities look ahead to the fall and winter flu and respiratory virus seasons, NIAM also serves as an important reminder to stay informed about recommended immunizations.

Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and respond to specific pathogens before they can cause serious illness. Over the past two centuries, immunization has transformed public health, helping make once-common and often deadly diseases – including polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and COVID-19 – far less common. The World Health Organization estimates that immunization prevents 3.5 to 5 million deaths each year, underscoring the extraordinary impact of vaccination.

The science behind vaccines continues to advance. Life science treatments and therapies have enabled researchers to develop new vaccine platforms, improve existing vaccines and respond more rapidly to emerging infectious diseases. These innovations are expanding the potential of immunization, from protecting against infectious diseases to exploring vaccines for conditions such as cancer and other complex diseases.

Safety remains a cornerstone of vaccine development and use. Before vaccines are approved, they undergo rigorous testing in clinical trials, and their safety continues to be monitored after they are introduced. Health authorities and independent scientific experts review safety data and investigate potential concerns as they arise. The WHO reports that most childhood vaccines have been used for decades and that serious vaccine-related side effects are extremely rare. Leading medical organizations continue to support evidence-based immunizations emphasizing that vaccine recommendations should be guided by rigorous scientific evidence, patient safety, and independent medical expertise.

As immunization recommendations continue to evolve, decisions should be guided by the best available scientific evidence and careful evaluation of benefits and risks. Families can work with their healthcare providers to understand current recommendations and determine which vaccines are appropriate for themselves and their children.

National Immunization Awareness Month is an opportunity to recognize both how far vaccine science has come and the potential of life science advancements to continue improving health and saving lives. Continued investment in research, innovation, safety monitoring and access will be essential to ensuring that the benefits of immunization reach future generations.

CBF Executive Director to Serve on California Precision Medicine Advisory Council

Patricia Cooper, Executive Director of the California Biotechnology Foundation (CBF), is honored to have been invited to serve on the California Precision Medicine Advisory Council, which provides recommendations to the California Health and Human Services Agency on initiatives that advance precision medicine across the state.

The Advisory Council is part of the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine (CIAPM), which brings together leaders from healthcare, research, industry, government and patient advocacy to accelerate the development and adoption of precision medicine—an approach that tailors disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment to an individual’s unique genetics, environment and lifestyle. CIAPM works to improve health outcomes, expand access to innovative care and strengthen California’s leadership in biomedical innovation.
