CBF Honors Hispanic Heritage & Sickle Cell Awareness This September
September 2025
September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month: New Hope Through Innovation & Policy
Each September, National Sickle Cell Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the realities of sickle cell disease (SCD)—a painful and life-threatening genetic condition that disproportionately affects Black and African American communities. More than 9,000 Californians live with SCD, joining 100,000 people across the United States and more than 20 million worldwide.
While SCD has long been overlooked and stigmatized, advances in science are transforming what is possible. Just last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first-ever gene therapies for sickle cell disease—Casgevy by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Lyfgenia by bluebird bio. These groundbreaking treatments aim to correct the root cause of SCD, offering patients the potential for longer, healthier, and more productive lives.
California’s life science industry has been central to this progress. Our state is home to pioneering researchers, cutting-edge biotechnology companies, and world-class medical centers that are advancing therapies from discovery through clinical trials. Yet innovation alone is not enough. Equitable access, robust funding for research, and policies that support both patient care and the biotechnology ecosystem are critical to ensuring breakthroughs reach those who need them most.
State policymakers play a vital role in sustaining this momentum. Continued investment in biomedical research, workforce training, and healthcare infrastructure helps California remain a global leader in life sciences. At the same time, state action to address health disparities, expand access to advanced treatments, and support early-stage innovation will ensure patients benefit directly from scientific progress.
This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the California Biotechnology Foundation calls on policymakers to stand with patients, caregivers, advocates, and the life science community. Together, we can ensure that the promise of innovation translates into real hope, equity, and cures for Californians living with sickle cell disease.
